Wacken Open Air

(W:O:A) es el festival más grande exclusivamente de heavy metal en el mundo. Se realiza anualmente en la pequeña ciudad de Wacken en el norte de Alemania. Con 60.000 visitantes, atrae a fans de casi todo subgénero del metal.
El festival se realizó por primera vez en 1990 como un pequeño acontecimiento para bandas alemanas locales. Por el año 1998, el acontecimiento ya se había convertido en el mayor festival de metal en Europa y uno de los más importantes en todo el mundo, incluyendo más de 70 bandas de Norteamérica, Australia y Europa. W:O:A se celebra normalmente a inicios del mes de agosto y dura tres días. Los más de 70 artistas tocan en 4 escenarios separados en todo el curso del festival.

La primera noche de festival más pudo considerarse una fiesta de bienvenida en la que actuaron: Metakilla, Mambo Kurt.

En el oficialmente primer día actuaron los cabeza de cartel Iron Maiden, además de Lauren Harris, Airbourne, Avenged Sevenfold, Mustasch, Sturm & Drang, Nashville Pussy, Leaves' Eyes, Concept Insomnia, Negura Bunget, Alestorm.
Para el segundo día se guardaron grupos como Children of Bodom, Opeth, Kamelot, Corvu Corax y Avantasia (éste último como cabeza de cartel del día). El resto de actuaciones del día las llevaron a cabo las bandas Grave, Job for a Cowboy, Ensiferum, Soilwork, Gorgoroth, Mortal Sin, Unearth, Sonata Arctica, Primordial, Cynic, Headhunter, Sabaton, Massacre, The Haunted, Crematory, The Rotted, Destructor, Autumn, Stamina, Psychopunch, Van Canto, Dream of an Opium Eater, Saltatio Mortis, Excrementory Grindfuckers.

La próxima edición del Wacken Open Air alemán agota las 70 mil entradas 7 meses antes de su celebración.
La ICS Festival Service GMBH, empresa responsable de la organización del Festival Wacken Open Air, ha anunciado que ya se han agotado las 70 mil entradas para el evento del año que viene, que será realizado entre los días 30 de julio y º de agosto de 2009 en Wacken, Alemania.Según la productora: dos “Nunca antes un festival de este porte ha agotado sus entradas 2 veces en el mismo año. Pero nosotros no buscamos records, simplemente queremos crear un gran festival para ustedes y estamos trabajando en esto durante más de 20 años teniendo la responsabilidad de hacer lo mejor para los fans del mundo. Les agradecemos por este increíble apoyo y lealtad”.
